A Spell to Break Environment Design

A Spell to Break

In this short film that I co-directed, a witch who is struggling with her ability to summon spirits learns that sometimes, the best thing to do is to accept help.

For this project, I collaborated with my two co-directors to lead a team of 10 students to create an animated short film. As one of the art leads, I utilized a collaborative and iterative process to design the environment. Since this was a collaborative project that we would be seeing through to production, I was designing with the purpose of unifying our vision, creating functional references, and communicating clearly with the team.
This initial sketch of the village was to propose an idea for the aesthetic of the town and the witch's hut. From there, I created the more defined reference for the witch's hut that you can find at the top of this project.

Background Paint Overs

In order to efficiently make cohesive backgrounds for our interior shots, our team did paint overs of a 3D model (modeled by Ash Liang). In Maya, I overlaid our storyboards or a frame of animation on the camera to ensure the capture would match any animation we'd already done. I then took these 3D captures and painted on color, textures, and environment details to match the 2D animation of our film.
